A platform for cultural legacy

International Womens Day 2022

Like any community,

a social platform is not a neutral zone.

There’s always a culture that frames how people interact. Beyond the hygiene-factor of ‘play nice’ rules,

how leaders choose to use their voice (and where they invest their $$$) really matters

in creating the shape and tone of that culture.

In a world rife with misogyny, gaming traditionally doesn’t have a great rep for inclusivity. For years, female gamers felt they had to lie low behind gender-neutral usernames, for fear of prejudice or overt bullying. But Twitch has always wanted none of that. Born as a natural home for gamers and as a platform where users' cameras are ON, it’s always been important for the brand to take an unambiguous position. Setting the stage for everyone to shine, rather than hide in the shadows.

Twitch leadership has held an ongoing commitment to loudly declare their hand: ‘we support all genders’. This isn’t a rule written into the small-print of the terms of engagement - it’s something they continually broadcast through a megaphone. Using the platform to make a big statement about the culture they promote.

So International Women’s Day has always been an important cultural moment for Twitch and is a cause in which they invest genuine care and energy. It’s a commitment - celebrated every year - constantly building legacy and championing female creators on Twitch.
